Prior to October
1999, a Christian motorcycle organization tending the needs of sport bike
enthusiasts wasn't available. There was an apparent need, a niche left
unattended.
In the fall of 1999, I was completing my
second year of service with the Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries. Prior years were spent with the Christian
Motorcyclist Association. Both organizations were focused on evangelistic
pursuits geared toward the "lost biker", "the 1%er", prison
ministry and events/rallies involving the "cruiser" lifestyle.
Although both organizations are open to anyone no matter what type of
motorcycle, they lacked an outreach to the sport bike enthusiast.
In October of 1999, after much prayer and
reflection, the first rudimentary CSBA web page was posted on the Internet,
emphasizing an online fellowship of Christian sport bike enthusiasts. Initial
response was minimal. After a number of months, I started to feel the whole
concept was misplaced. Perhaps the desire for a Christian sport bike
organization was rooted in my ego rather than a need to spread the Good News of
Jesus Christ.
Eventually a few people found the CSBA site
and the emails started traveling back and forth. The membership rose to 11 and
leveled out. Surely there had to be more Christians riding sport
bikes....somewhere? The ways of the Internet are well known to many of its
users, unfortunately I was not one of its more savvy participants. Search
engines take time to list new sites, and there are literally thousands of
search engines worming their way through millions of web pages. One day the
worms found the CSBA.
Web page hits went from 4 in 24 hours to 20,
then 40 and held steady. New members were joining online. After one year, the
association had over 50 members sprinkled all over the US, Europe and Australia. Local chapters were established in a few cities and
the "flesh and blood" work of talking to people, face to face rather
than email, began.
As the CSBA started its second year, it was
time for the cyber relationships to "Go Live". The First National
Rally was planned and held at Deal's Gap, NC in May of 2001. Over 43 members
and friends attended to ride some of the finest (and most challenging) roads in
the East. For three days we rode, entered into fellowship and prayed together.
We established bonds of friendship that quickly turned from an "online
presence" to one of family membership. We had
arrived!
As the years passed, we partnered with a race team
(CSBRacing) to minister at race venues.
We also partner with a South African outreach ministry (Changing
Tomorrow Children’s Foundation) that tends to the needs of orphaned and
homeless children. We also started
sending free NIV Bibles all over the world to people who couldn’t afford one.
God has opened many doors for us.
As the CSBA grows (over 1035 members as we
approach our 8th anniversary), we trust in God that our mission and purpose are
to do His Will each day and at every event. We will continue to reach out to
those around us, use the bikes as "conversation starters" for His
Word and continue our attempt to walk humbly in the shadow of Our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ.
We're excited about the prospects before us.
Our emphasis and our mission is to spread the Word of
God and the Good News of Jesus Christ to the lost, unsaved and backslidden that
God puts before us.
If you're reading this and are contemplating
membership, prayerfully consider if God led you here and join us for the ride
of a lifetime.
God bless,
Brian Phillips
