From the Servant’s Desk

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24

Did you ever wonder what “mammon” means?  I understand the concept of serving God, but who or what is mammon?

From the Dictionnaire Infernal - Collin de Plancy (1863) (paraphrased)

“Mammon was the demon of avarice. Milton says he taught men to rend the breast of the earth to wrest away her treasures”.  Another interpretation:  In the Bible, "mammon" is not a demon but simply an Aramaic word meaning "wealth" or "property."

No matter how many Google hits I find, this verse from Matthew continues to lie heavily on my heart.

As Christians, we have to deal with money issues every day; bills need to be paid, the car has to be fixed, and the kids need braces!

The list of issues demanding our money never seems to end.  Even when we attend Sunday services, the building committee is talking about pledges needed to build a new addition on the church.

I wish I had some sage advice to pass along on this subject…I don’t.  I do have experiences with these issues both before and after I was saved.  In my “BC” days, money issues would drive me nuts.  Even as a new Christian, I still worried about finances.  It was like that part of my life wasn’t with me the night I got saved.  Maybe the financial part of my brain was somewhere else the night Jesus Christ gave me peace and serenity.

As I stumbled along the path trying to follow Christ, I learned numerous times that He’s in control, and that the more I worried about the things of this world, the more messed up things became.  Learning to “trust in The Lord” isn’t the easiest way of life to pick up quickly.  With me, I had to go against my gut feelings and follow the urgings of He that I serve.
After a number of situations involving money that seemingly worked themselves out without any specific expertise on my part, I began lean on The Lord when He wanted me to do His bidding, and avoid getting my head all tied up in knots trying to figure out how I was going to accomplish the task.

In a similar vein, I receive emails from members concerned that they can’t afford their annual dues payment.  I think I’m more uncomfortable reading that kind of email than the person having to sit in front of a computer screen typing it. I’ve written on this subject in the past, but maybe I need to have it posted on the opening page of the CSBA website: AS A CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION, WE’RE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR ABILITY TO PAY ANNUAL DUES.  PLEASE DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE MONEY!!

What we are concerned about as a Christian organization is your walk with The Lord.  We endeavor to establish groups of believers across this country that will fellowship together and lift each other up as we make our way through this oft times troubling world.  I don’t remember reading anything in the Bible about Jesus turning someone away because of money.  A few potential followers had some issues with too much money, but the CSBA has not had to grapple with that thorny issue.

Not worrying about the money should become second nature in your walk.  If presented with paying household bills or buying a custom exhaust system for your bike, the “no brainer” light should go off in your head; you pay the household bills.

Where the decision-making gets dicey is when you have to decide on a new exhaust system VERSUS sending the money to a mission outreach, church building fund or contributing to a local evangelistic endeavor.  When you find yourself in this type of situation, go to prayer.  If the answer doesn’t come the first day, pray some more.  God answers prayer.  He’ll let you know what to do with that excess income that
He blessed you with.  Too many of us think we earned that money through OUR skills and efforts.  In reality, it was God that provided the right thing to say that secured that big sale, or gave us that inspirational idea to paint the widgets turquoise, thus sparking a whole new marketing trend.  God is behind everything we receive.  Let’s remember Him the next time we’re involved in one of those money quandaries.  Don’t let money get in the way of what God put us here to do.  We’re working to get through this world, and spend eternity with Him.  But we’re also supposed to be spreading the Good News of His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ.  Let’s get those bikes on the road, and wait for God to put those witness opportunities in front of us.  Worrying about money will take your mind off the mission.

God bless.

CSBA News

NEED A CSBA STICKER?

We finally have new stickers in stock!  Current color choices are white and blue (transparent background).  I’m ordering additional stickers in red and in black also with the transparent background.

And the cost?  If you feel moved, you can make a donation to the Bible Fund or Wim’s kids at BreakThrough Ministry (http://www.christiansportbike.com/donate.cgi).
I’d like the stickers to be a gesture of thanks to the membership for helping to make the CSBA a Christian association that makes difference for Jesus Christ, both here and around the world.

Email your name, address, member number and sticker color (white – blue – black – red) to info@christiansportbike.com.  If you’re interested in red or black stickers, allow a few weeks until they’re available.

 T-SHIRT BLOWOUT CONTINUES!

That’s right, faithful members, you’ve held off buying a CSBA T-shirt waiting for that elusive sale.  You rode around all last summer in that cheesy tank top with the mustard and ketchup stains on the front.  Why?  Because you’re not paying full price for anything!

Our shirts are no longer $18.00 or $20.00….We’re pushing them out the door at $15.00 for one, $25.00 for two and $35.00 for three CSBA shirts.  Check out the styles at: http://www.christiansportbike.com/former/t-shirts.htm

One thing has changed since last month’s announcement.  Since I’m not the best detail guy in the world, I neglected to check to see if the PayPal boxes were adjusted to the correct amounts.  They weren’t and this site is actually published in California by a really nice guy who, unfortunately, travels all the time.  Therefore, the best way to make a purchase:

  1. Check that the shirts you want are in stock (jcmathis@insight.rr.com)
  2. Email me with name, address and shirt information (info@christiansportbike.com)
  3. Mail a check for “The Christian Sport Bike Assoc” to:
  4. Marvin Gurganus, PO Box 511, Jamesville, NC 27846

A few disclaimers:

  • Multiple shirt orders must go to the same mailing address.
  • When the current stock is gone, that’s it.  There’ll be no more.  No back orders.

Check the available inventory listed below as of 4/1/06.  If your size and style isn’t listed, DON’T ORDER!

2006 CSBA Rallies

There will be rallies this riding season; it’s just a matter of getting the details together.  Here are some “for sure” events:

  1. Deal’s GapMay 15 to 21, 2006, headquartered at the Micro-Tell Inn, Robbinsville, NC.  This is our national rally; it’s the BIG ONE.  Don’t miss it!  Registration and rally details will be posted at http://www.csbatriadnc.com/

From Beth Matthews: Rosi Crawford has been diligently putting together the agenda for the rally. I e-mailed her this morning about you wanting to have a meeting of board members and chapter leaders, and that you want to share your Africa experience. A couple of us are putting together the different route descriptions, and they should all be submitted in the next day or two. The “dragon” and “skyway” rides are going to be left “loose” for anyone who wants to go that way. They don’t really need a leader, but there will be plenty there who are familiar with them. Marvin has a friend who is going to come play the piano for us on Friday night. Wednesday night will be a ride to Coker Creek for the evening service at Calvary Baptist church, and then a night ride back across the skyway. An alterative choice for anyone who doesn’t want to go to Coker Creek is to attend an evening service in Robbinsville. Art (WRP SPD) has a message of encouragement to share one evening. The remaining evenings are open for testimonies, fellowship, group study, etc.

Rosi has done a great job with the agenda. Thanks Rosi!!!

Beth Matthews

Servant’s Note:  I’ll be heading down to the Gap on Sunday May 14, 2006.  I’d like to have the annual CSBA board of directors meeting Wednesday night (5/17/06) after the service at Coker Creek.  I’d also like to have a chapter leaders meeting Tuesday night (5/16/06).  I’ll be bringing a lot of materials and visuals from BreakThrough Ministry in South Africa to preview if we get rained out one morning or afternoon.

  1. Rocky Mountain Rally – June 8 to 11, 2006, Estes Park, CO. Check their website for additional info. http://www.cocsba.com/
  2. The Longest Day Rally – June 22 to 25, 2006, new this year!  Spend a long weekend with Bob Brown in north central Pennsylvania, headquartered in Wellsboro, PA.
  3. CSBA Run for The Word – July 15-16, 2006.
  4. CSBA “Day at the Races” – 8/19/06 Virginia International Raceway.
  5. Southern Virginia Rally – Sept. 15-17, 2006.
  6. CSBA Fall Rally – September 22 to 24, 2006, headquartered in Wellsboro, PA.  Ride some of best, yet least known, country roads, in the northeast.  This rally just keeps getting better.
  7. CSBA Midwest Rally – Rumor has it that the Chicago gang is again invading the Missouri Ozarks.  More details to come.

And from Joe Cotterino CSBA NorthEast PA Chapter:

”I have hatched a plan during the winter solitude.  I would like to bounce this off you and see what you think.
The events of 9/11/2001 have affected all of us with some more than others.  There were of course families that lost loved ones instantly on
that day but there have been well over 2100 US soldiers killed in Iraq as a result of the incidents that took place that day.  I know you know all of this but I just wanted to lay some background.
In honor of the aforementioned sacrifice, my thought is to plan and execute a "Memorial Ride" to Shanksville, PA, the crash site of UAL Flight 93.  I have added the link to the Flight 93Memorial Chapel and crash site.  They hold a candle light vigil there every year.  I thought it would be awesome for all of us to ride in and participate. Maybe have a trail vehicle or two hauling Bibles and tracts that we could hand out at the site?  I would like to do it cooperatively with the other PA chapters and include press coverage if we deem it beneficial to the cause.  I have several friends in the news industry that would love to put a positive spin on the event.  My vision is of several hundred bikes.  I have not chosen a route but it will not be a slab ride. As we cannot take all day either, I was thinking of utilizing the local chapters to establish enjoyable details for the portion of the route that would generally pass through their area.  I figured you could provide a tantalizing route from A-town to an agreed transition/meeting point to link up with the Central PA region.  I will bring my clan and a few more (DESMO) to link up with you and ride with your chapter.
There are obviously more details that need going over, but this is the basic concept of the operation.  We have plenty of time to coordinate, but I figured some details could take some doing, so I want to start everything early.
So, what do you think?

I talked to Rev. Mascherino for a long time last night.  He seemed very happy with the plan.  I discussed things such as arrival time, parking, and the PA Gov Rendell's schedule.  I have nailed down with him that our arrival, (I gave him a more reasonable estimate of 10-100 bikes), is welcome, and will not be an inconvenience.  There are, however, scheduling issues to deal with due to dignitaries, and certain areas being closed during certain times, etc.  The main thing is, we can indeed, do this.  In fact, if we nail down a fairly accurate ETA, he will add us to the itinerary.  If we have a pastor with us, and would like to do a service, that is good too.  He will have the tentative plan up on the net in a few days.  He seemed very agreeable and willing to work with us.”

2006 FROZEN CHOSEN WINNER
By Bill Allen

The 2006 CSBA Frozen Chosen contest winner is Budd Midkiff from Winston-Salem, NC.
In order to give more people a chance at winning, this year’s contest winner had to not only submit to the rigors of cold weather riding, he/she was required to write a suitably rigorous "Frozen Chosen" ride report.  Here’s Budd’s:

Feb 9, 2006

I met CSBA Triad-NC Chapter Leader Chris Crawford for breakfast at Shoney's on Hwy 68. My XJ900 was down for some PM and I had my friend’s Yamaha R1.  Woke up to light dusting of snow on the ground. My first thought was to drive...if I had my bike...no worries...borrowed R1...second thoughts.  I decided to take it slow and headed out. So glad I did, as the roads were wet but not slick.

I met up with Slow 7 (Chris), and had breakfast, praying before we ate. A man stopped by our table and talked about bikes a minute then continued to his table. We continued our conversation and meal.  The man, having finished before us, stopped by our table on his way out. He said "I noticed you guys praying before you ate..." "I'd like to pick up your tab...I just ask that you do the same for someone else the same way".
After some mutual resistance from us he reached down and picked up Chris's ticket and went to the counter. We looked at each other surprised, my ticket still on the table. A moment later he returned and said, "It seems that I did not get all of the tickets" and reached over me and picked up the other ticket! Slow7 and I gave him our cards and said good by.

The ride was not that spectacular... but the breakfast fellowship with Chris and the "pick up the tab" blessing was awesome.
God is so good! He provides work, weather (I don't care if it's good or not) good is better, motorcycles, and safety. Am I in heaven?
God Bless you all.

FROM THE CSBA EMAIL BAG

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am indeed honored to give Christian greetings to you all, trusting that the LORD is good, keeping you in the work of bringing humanity to home that wonderful duty to perform before Jesus Christ returns back.

Please spare me these opportunities to share with you my experience in the work of our Lord; I am JAMES and GRACE OKENDA SAVE BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST. We fellowship in our local church with 57 members who do attend regularly, and due to life changes, we have had so many children left as a result of their parents dying because of malaria and AIDS, so thought it better to bring the children’s home as other human being. Now we are questing for your prayers towards the support of these children. By now we are having 15 orphans under our care we are appealing for well-wishers to come for this destitute children.

LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU DEAR BRETHRENS.

Pastor

James Okenda.

james_okenda@yahoo.com

And:

Dear Brian servant of the Lord,

I am indeed honored to receive your encouraging email that you will be praying for me, and that more prayers are coming to us in the mighty name of our Lord.

We have been encouraged spiritually, and this has spoken volumes of words to me, that you really care in the LORD.  Please, I will be happy if I hear from you; here we have a lot to do in caring for these orphans. We need many prayers as such, so that the Lord will open avenues for these disillusioned children. So brother, in the mercies of the Lord, pray for this course.

Until then, I graciously hope you will communicate and let us hear from you.

In His Name

James Okenda.
