October 2007 CSBA Newsletter

From the Servant’s Desk:

It’s been awhile since the last newsletter.  Working full time in management is not quite as warm and fuzzy as being semi-retired and selling bikes in the summer months.  And this warm Fall weather…who can sit in front of a computer screen?  My apologies.

First a few quick items:

Matthew 28: 18-20

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

There was a post on the CSBA message board by the CSBA Chaplain, Art Lohman concerning the relationship of evangelism and fellowship in the CSBA:

Fellowship or Outreach?
By Art Lohman
”The question has been raised on several occasions and is both valid and needs to be addressed as the CSBA enters a period of growth and the pains that come with it. It is our common bond to honor God with our lives and ride sport bikes that have brought us together from many diverse backgrounds. All of us are struggling to live faithfully in a culture and world that seeks to trivialize those who follow Christ at best, and openly insult and persecute at worst.

So when the opportunity presents itself for a rally, we want to saddle up and share some good riding, laughter and friendship with other like-minded riders. A rally that becomes a chore in theological discussions and outreach labors is not going to be much of a rally. But all of us recognize that as a group we have much potential to encourage and inspire youth and adults to grow in faith and hope in Christ.
Taking a leap of faith at the fall rally, we prayed, and without knowing exactly what would happen, we decided to set up our bikes in town, with an easy up tent, banner, some lights, Bibles and bike posters with scripture on them. Over the next few hours over 100 people were drawn to the bikes, and readily opened up to share their faith, ask questions and become friends. The response was overwhelming.
Bob Brown often tells us that when we use the gifts that God has given us, you don’t need to force open doors, God will open them when we are ready to walk through. But it does take a little faith and courage to step through the doorway. We had a great time in fellowship on that parking lot, and did some awesome outreach. This rally (’07 PA Fall Rally) watched one of our first steps for the CSBA to step out into the surrounding culture as a relevant and powerful witness to young and old alike.
We are no longer a small group of faithful speed freaks. We are now a large group of 1000+ members, of faithful speed freaks, and I would encourage us as local chapters and at regional rallies to take the next step of faith and plan ways that our time together can impact the lives of others around us for the kingdom of the living Christ ”

Art’s point is well taken.  Before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He didn’t advise His followers to hang out together and avoid the possible repercussions of preaching redemption of sin to non-believers.  In Matthew 28, Jesus is quite clear in His instructions to “make disciples of all nations”.
What if you’re “uncomfortable” evangelizing to strangers?  That’s where the process of fellowship enters the mix.  If you’re a new believer or find yourself in the position of being a “comfortable Christian”, fellowshipping with other Christians and spending time in The Word will build your confidence to reach out to others.

Many times over the last seven years, I’ve been asked and asked myself, “What is the CSBA?”  Is it just about sport bike riders?  Is it just about going faster than those CMA guys?  Is it about meeting once or twice a year to blow off some steam…with a bunch of Christians?
The CSBA is an opportunity to use the machines and sport, to which you’ve been attracted, to reach out to others for Jesus Christ.  Actually, your ability to own and ride a highly technical machine is a God-given opportunity.  I don’t believe God provided me with the means to spend disposable income on fast bikes merely to give myself an occasional rush on Saturday mornings or zipping home from work.  The bikes have a purpose, i.e. to meet others and possibly witness to them; either verbally or by example.

As we make our way through this troubled, secular world, we have choices and opportunities.  The ability to choose one path over another is a gift from God.  He gave each of us the ability to choose.  He also provides us with many opportunities to further His Kingdom.  Make the choice to seize the opportunity.

God bless

ATTENTION OHIO CSBA MEMBERS!

Hello everyone,

Some of you know me and others may not. My name is John Mathis, CSBA #287.  I moved to Delaware, Ohio on June of 2004 and shortly after that, sold my street bike and got involved with dual sporting.  Last May I purchased a new street bike (FZ6) and am now wishing to get more involved with the CSBA. I am still doing the dual sporting but I am also riding the FZ6 quite often. I would like to know how many of you are still active riders and would be interested in getting an Ohio Chapter up and running.

I spent last weekend at the NC Chapter rally and it was nice to see a group that is truly a family of brothers and sisters in Christ that all have the same interest in sport bike riding. I would love to have someone say the same about the Ohio Chapter in the coming year.

If any of you have the same desire, please reply.

Your Brother in Christ,
John Mathis
CSBA #287

CSBA WINTER LEADERSHIP AND PLANNING MEETING

I posted the following a few days ago:

The 2008 CSBA Winter meeting will be held the weekend of Jan 18-19-20, 2008 at Sandy Cove Resort, North East, MD (http://www.sandycove.org/)
Estimated cost is $181 for the weekend. Two to a room...meals included.  Five meals are included with the room rate, Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast.  Room rate of $181 (for the weekend) is for two per room. The rooms reserved have three beds (1 queen and 2 singles). If you stay 3 to a room, the rate goes down a bit.

We'll have our own conference room and have access to all the facilities.

We plan to bring Dave Brown in from OH to run the Saturday Christian Leadership seminar. Saturday, we’ll also have Tony Edwards leading praise and worship before the AM and PM sessions.  (Starting to sound semi-organized, isn’t it?)
Friday & Saturday nights could be devoted to planning the 2008 season, prayer meetings, story telling, tall tales, etc.

Any and all CSBA members are welcome to attend. Chapter leaders and board members are urged to attend if at all possible.

I need to send in the reservation within the next few weeks. If you want to attend, let me know ASAP (mailto:brianp@christiansportbike.com)”

~ CARE CENTER ~

~ CHRIS & MARY ~

~ DONATION ~

As I reported last month we are waiting on the Health Inspector to visit the Center, but for 3 weeks solid I have been phoning and leaving messages to no avail. As I am writing this their phones are ringing and no-one answers, extremely frustrating, but it seems, something one has to live with more and more in Africa, so hopefully next month I will have good news!!

On to more positive things!! Chris and Mary from LA have moved here for a while to minister with us. They will be involved in school ministry mainly, and we welcome them and know that God will bless them for their willingness to move around the world to be part of His vision in Africa.

God also blessed us with a substantial donation from one of the churches I visited during my trip to North Carolina earlier this year, Cedar Branch Baptist church. This donation will allow us to finish the third house in one go and it is awesome how God works, adding people and contacts to bring His vision to fulfillment.

~ MOLEBOHENG ~

~ WOMAN'S CELL GROUP ~

One of the biggest surprises this past month has been Moleboheng, one of our smallest children.  She has slowly started to come out of her shell and blossom into a happy toddler.  Moleboheng has always been slightly out of the group (and at times just plain “out of it”), and we have never been sure how well she would progress in her learning.  But lately she has been surprising us all—she is smiling so much more, and we think she has begun to master the idea of numbers and counting!  Wim recently remarked how during writing activities she managed to hold the pencil correctly all on her own, and she is even now going down for a nap in the afternoons.  Granted, one of us has to lie down with her until she falls asleep, but she’s getting there!

The women LOVE the Wednesday cell held for them. Last time I reported that they also asked Taryn to help them with English classes, so she started that during this month and had great response from everyone showing up on Wednesdays!!

 ~ READING & BOOKS ~

Something that we started a couple of months ago is to have Irene (one of our Sesotho workers/volunteers) read to the children everyday after lunch a Sesotho story book.  The children at first were restless, but now it has become part of their routine, and they all know what will happen next when she gathers them around in the afternoons.  We want these children to be introduced to books and reading in general at an early age, in the hopes that reading will become a lasting part of their lives.  The Lord has been so gracious to us, and a South African organization has donated a number of brand-new Sesotho storybooks to the ministry.  Praise the Lord for yet another prayer answered!

Money

Here’s what happens with your dues.

  1. $2.00 (10%) of every $20.00 member dues payment is sent to Changing Tomorrow Children’s Foundation in Africa.
  2. CSBA “gear”, i.e., T-Shirts, stickers, patches and banners - not much of an annual expense as there’s a relatively small demand for T-Shirts and stickers.
  3. Bibles and the shipping costs - this expense is usually taken care of by the CSBA annual Run For The Word.
  4. There are miscellaneous expenses incurred, i.e., postage, and infrequent expenses incurred to organize and run a rally.
  5. Annual donation to CSB Racing - the board had approved of a donation in both 2005 and 2006 for water bottles to be distributed at race events.  We also purchased a pop-up tent in 2006 for CSB Racing to be used at events (we own the tent).

Our expenses as a large organization are low.  There are no salaries, rent, equipment or monthly bills of any kind, except for the monthly bank fee of the CSBA checking account.  No CSBA funds are used for board members to attend events.  Our website is managed by an individual who donates his time and expertise.

The bottom line:  Your board of directors is a tight fisted group.  We do our best to use your dues money to further the work of spreading The Good News of Jesus Christ.
