Hello all,

The day began dark, which was a new thing for me, but the sunrise keeps getting farther and farther away. I left my house when it was dark and arrived in Marysville at the diner just after 8:00 am. No one else had arrived yet, so I went in and ordered breakfast, used the bathroom, then settled in at the counter to relax until breakfast arrived. Right after my breakfast arrived, so did two other riders, Dan and Bruce. It was good to see both of them. They both got breakfast and we got acquainted and caught up with family, work and bikes. Once finished eating, we met up outside, and waited for one more rider, Jacob who was on his way. Once he arrived, we had a riders meeting, a discussion of the route, and a prayer for safety. We had a 5-10 mile slog on the highway to get around Harrisburg. We then got started on the twisties but encountered a few problems. The first problem was I didn't recon this ride, because my previously planned route, when reconned wasn't good and had a few repeat roads from a previous route. So I ditched that route and came up with this one, but I didn't have time to recon this one, so that lead to some routing errors. Our next issue came when I went down a road, turned and ended up right where I started, oops! We then went into town and turned south. Here we discussed getting fuel first and then talking about our options. It was during this conversation that I discovered that we were riding in areas that half of our riders knew quite well, with one previously living in the area. So, in learning this I asked one rider to get us back on route and lead for a bit. He did and wow, could he ride! Once we got to a certain point, I lead for the remainder of the day until we got to our endpoint, where we also had lunch. We got some food and hung out for a while. I also shared some Scripture then we all went on our way, two of us east, and two of us north. The only other two issues were the heat, (sweet mercy, it was hot!) and the traffic we kept encountering. I would like to tweak this route and do it again next year, because it definitely has potential. The Scripture is noted below.

The attributes of a godly and wise man, part 2. As we look once again at Proverbs we consider first, the book itself. It's 3000 years old, but it's message is timeless. It was written as a guide primarily to men, but women can gain from it too. It speaks mostly about wisdom, that distillation of life's experiences. The last time I shared from Proverbs I spoke of the following attributes: being wise, disciplined, insightful, prudent, discrete, listening, learned, understanding, knowledgeable, and discerning. On this ride I spoke about being responsive, open, accepting of wisdom of understanding, a seeker of truth and insight, the fear of the Lord, being upright, blameless, just, and faithful. In Chapter 1, verses 22-23 we read: 22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. In this passage we can see that to be wise, we need to be open and responsive. In addition, we need to be humble first to do the above things. For a proud man would consider himself already wise and not see any need for instruction or learning.

We then jumped to Proverbs 2:1-11. which reads: My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— 3 indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7 He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. 9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. 11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. In this passage we see the attributes of being accepting of wisdom and understanding, being a seeker of truth, having a fear of the Lord, being upright, blameless, just, and faithful. Observe the descriptive language of verse 1: "accepting words, storing up commands, turning your ear, applying your heart" once again speak of being open and willing to be taught truth from God. We also see a common thing in Scriptures, what I call the "if, then statement". When I learned early BASIC programming we learned about an if, then statement. In programming, you gave one variable a certain "trigger amount", so once that variable exceeded the target amount, it would follow the "then" part of the code. For example: if x >7 then goto 1060. Except here in Proverbs it's "IF you accept my words, store up my commands, turn your ear to wisdom, call out for insight, cry aloud for understanding, look and search for it; THEN you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of the Lord." In verse 5 we see the phrase, "the fear of the Lord" and this is not referencing a horror or terror of God, but instead a fearful respect. This is the same feeling one would have when standing before a judge in court, you know they have a great deal of authority so you treat them with respect and listen carefully to what they say. When we have this fear of the Lord, then God begins to reward us. In verses 6-8 we see God gives wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and success to the upright. He guards and protects those who are just and faithful . Also we see a progression of the "walk", the "course" and the "way" of those that follow God. First, the "walk" I feel speaks of your career, your business, your relationships. It speaks of the present, the right now in your life. Is Your "walk" blameless? Next, we see of the "course" of someone's life. This speaks to me on one's future, their plans for what's next, their plotted course in life. Is it the course in which the just travel? Lastly, the "way" speaks of who you are. Sometimes we hear people say, "oh that's just his way" or "that's the way she is". Is your "way" one of faithfulness to God and His teaching? In conclusion: we see the benefit of following after God, accepting His teaching and absorbing His wisdom in verses 9-11 of Proverbs 2. It says, " 9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. 11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you."

May God bless you all as we enter Autumn, and I hope to see you at the CSBA Fall rally or at our October ride!

Hopefully next year will work out better. This season was rough with the weekend work schedule not aligning good at all with rides.
