Ride Report
by Mark Hamm
The day began overcast and dreary. I thought, "what's going on, isn't it supposed to be sunny and nice today?" It even spritzed rain on me as I rode to the Marysville All American Diner. Before I got to the diner, I took a detour to get some ethanol free gas from a station I saw posted up on a link on the CSBA Facebook page. I discovered this gas is 50 cents more expensive than super unleaded. After fueling up I arrived at the diner and went inside to find a seat. The parking lot was almost full and so was the diner. I sat at the counter, ordered my food, and checked my phone. I found out my wingman, andyr, wasn't coming because he was sick. :( I had wanted him to lead since he reconned the route, but it looks like I would be doing it now. After finishing my breakfast, (the food is good :) ) I went out to see if anyone had arrived. A few people that said they were coming had posted up earlier in the week saying that they couldn't make it, so I wasn't expecting many people. The rest of the people that said they were coming just didn't come, very discouraging. I stood in the parking lot for another 45 minutes just to be sure, then changed the route a bit, snapped a photo, and off I went. When God called me to do this, He said I should do these rides, even if no one showed up, so I did. I remember when I was in missionary school, 23 years ago, a missionary that came off the field told us that starting a mission is a lot like plowing a field; it is hard work and you don't see much results.

My altered route was a lot of fun, and the weather really made a turn for the better. It really did become a perfect day for a ride, thank you God. As I rode down to the state forest I shot a few pictures and took note of mileage markers at turns. I met up with a long time CSBA member on the edge of the forest, he had just stopped there 30 seconds prior, talk about perfect timing! Thanks again God. :D He led the way since this was his "back yard" and lived only a few miles away. We had a great lunch (good food also) and got caught up on each others families and lives. I shared the Word for this month and we got back on the road. We rode together for another hour and a half before he split off for home. I continued north and got lost right near the end of the route. I stopped at a hunting club, got the map out, discovered where I was and how to get to the PA Turnpike. I even crossed the Appalachian trail on the way to the new end of the route. I never did find the end of the route, another adventure typical of a CSBA ride, it is never boring. :) After getting fueled up I put some cash in my tank compartment and got on the Turnpike, wow, prices on there are expensive! I got off at the Lebanon/Lancaster exit and rode the April Eastern PA chapter route in reverse to get me to Reading,PA. I got home before 5pm, 365 miles door to door, it was a good ride. The word below is the first in a series on the principles of manhood. I hope to see you all next month for another great ride.

The first principle of manhood: A real man rejects passivity. When we look in the Scriptures to understand this principle we go to Genesis 2:15-22. Here we see God give Adam his "marching orders"; take care of this Garden and don't eat the forbidden fruit. 15 The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.
21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.

Here we see what God has given Adam: 1) a will to obey, 2) a work to do, and 3) a woman to love. It is also what He wants to give us, if we are open to receive it. These are our explicit responsibilities as men. Follow God's will, seek out and do His work, and love the wife He has put in our lives. Now in Genesis 3:1-7 we see Adam drop the ball in big way. Bear in mind, he was innocent at the time, but all the same, his instructions from God were clear and simple. The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” 2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. 3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’” 4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” 6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. 7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. I have put in bold a passage in verse 6 for emphasis to show all while Eve was being told something untrue, Adam just stood there. He didn't dispute what was said, didn't argue, or get a hoe or shovel and kill that lying snake, he was passive and just stood there. My goal is not to insult this man but learn from his mistake, so we all may be wiser. Things go badly for Adam and Eve after this, and the same usually happens for us when we are reactive instead of proactive, passive and not active. When I mean active, I don't mean obnoxious and pushy, that comes from impatience and self, not from God. Instead we should go forward as the Holy Spirit leads and live as Christ did, with purpose and intention.
Since we are human as Adam we also default to passivity. I Corinthians 15:22 speaks of how we all came from Adam, so we all will die. 22 Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life. But we do have a choice, we can choose another to follow. Let's look at a passage spoken about Jesus, Philippians 2:5-8 5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. I have underlined the action words in the above passage for emphasis. We can see that Jesus lived with intention, He did not stand around letting things happen. He had a will (His Father's) to obey, and work to do (establish the Kingdom of God on Earth) and a "woman" to love (the church, called the "bride of Christ" in the Scriptures). Real manhood begins with a decision to reject social and spiritual passivity when doing nothing is the more comfortable and natural option. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to seeing you in June. 8-)
